My Wife Said I Couldn’t Make Money Online – She Was Wrong

This is what my better half told me when I first said I was going to start in Internet business.

I had just moved to Japan and gotten married, and I wanted a way to earn money that would also give me the freedom to travel to and from Australia. An Internet business sounded like just the ticket.

My wife didn’t see the opportunity as clearly as I did though. I was DETERMINED though, so I had to boldly but politely say ‘Honey, I’ve got this’. I went for it.

I spent a couple of thousand dollars getting coaching (I was a complete newbie!) and the basic tools I needed to start an online business together (autoresponder, website, advertising, etc.).

Then it was up to me to PROVE HER WRONG! To be honest, that was a big part of my motivation. I didn’t want to let her or I down.

I was on a mission to make it work. I gave up TV and social events. I would stay up late, tapping away at the keyboard, making it work into the wee hours of the morning…

Slowly but surely I was chipping away.

I would get a few subscribers every day through safelists and free traffic from articles and feeder pages. Slowly but surely I got more and more subscribers. I got more and more order buttons up online for selling digital products I thought my list would buy.

Eventually, my hard work paid off. I started to make a sale a week, then one every two days, then one everyday.

The snowball effect start kicked in. My small successes added up to big successes.

I was seeing PROOF that this was working and I could turn this IM business thing into a serious income.. Now I just needed to keep it up! So I did.

Today, I am making a fine income from my online business, and most of it on autopilot. I was (and still am) building a business, not just making money.

It sure as hell didn’t happen overnight though.. there were days when I thought I’d never see a penny come my way!

“This isn’t working!”, “What’s the point?!”

Did I ever have doubts and come close to throwing in the towel? Of course. I don’t think there is any Entrepreneur who hasn’t had doubts and though a million times “Is this gonna work?”

I would ask myself almost daily “What’s the point?”

What’s the point of setting up this product? What’s the point of writing this blog post? What’s the point of making this video? What’s the point of writing this many follow-up emails?”

But do you know what?

I COUNTED MY SMALL SUCCESSES

Like feather’s on a camel’s back. Eventually, one too many will break it.

In my IM career, it truly was a case of starting slow, placing feathers on the camel’s back.

Results came in so small at the beginning. I could hardly see the rewards. But they were there.

Each new subscriber, each new blog post, each new video, each product launch, each JV connection, each email broadcast – were ALL a little success, progress – and it all added up.

Each small success was proof that I could do this.

Each small success was a boost in my confidence.

I AVOIDED NEGATIVITY

I just wouldn’t accept anyone’s dumb statements like “you can’t” or “you’re wasting your time”… Those kinds of comments can break you.

The skepticism comes because they simply do not understand what an ‘internet business’ is. They fear it. They don’t believe they could ever do it, so they try to smack down anyone who thinks they can. Don’t allow yourself to be brought down.

If you think you’ll get some negative backlash from someone, just don’t tell anyone your plans or ideas. You don’t need to tell anyone. Keep your dream and your activities secret from your family or friends who just don’t understand.

Avoid negativity at any cost if you want to succeed. And that includes the voice in your head.

Whenever someone (including your brain) says something negative, change the subject quickly. Go somewhere else or think positive thoughts. Think about the reasons WHY you can do it.

You don’t need to convince anyone but yourself that you can succeed. You will be able to convince other people when  the dollars start rolling in. How can they argue with you then?

Soak Yourself In Positivity

With the internet, digital and physical books and audios, it’s easy to feast on positive and motivating material. In fact, it’s a MUST!

Even though I didn’t have a lot of support from my spouse, I was surrounding myself with others online (particularly my coach) who were also doing the ‘online thing’.

I was also reading a lot of books and training courses. A book that changed my life was “The Magic Of Thinking Big” by Dr David Schwartz. I realized my potential to achieve anything I set my mind to.

If you can get your non-supporting spouse to read some books like that or meet some of your friends who are already successful online, then you can watch the skepticism wash away.

In fact, socializing with other successful business owners has huge benefits. Head over to Meetup.com and search for ‘entrepreneur’ or ‘business’ groups in your area.

Start mingling with like-minded people. That will bestow even more confidence in you and give you ideas, not to mention your network will grow and the possibilities of joint venture deals.

So when your spouse or other family member gives you negativity, be strong. Don’t believe them! Say ‘I’ve got this’ and do what you have to do to make it work.

I hope these ideas and tactics are useful for you to build your confidence and get small results, that will eventually break the camel’s back and turn your hard work into a business that provides a great source of income that you (and your spouse) can enjoy!

“I’m A Nobody, Why Would Anyone Buy My Products!?”

I remember having these exact thoughts when I first started out….

“What makes ME qualified to sell to anyone?”

“Who on earth would ever buy from me? “

Maybe you’re having these same feeling too if you’re just getting started with your internet business. It’s normal to feel this way, but that’s not to say you should.

If you have these feelings and thoughts, you need to try to quickly overcome them. In other words “Get over it!” Those feelings are just going to slow you down. You can overcome them by understanding one main concept.

You don’t need to be the smartest, most successful, experienced person in your niche to start selling, or start a business. You just need to be brave and put yourself (and your products) out there!

Like the old saying goes, “Ready, Fire, Aim!” Just shoot it out and re-asses later. In other words, forget about perfection!

You don’t need to have the most amazing product on the market right from day one to start selling it. Some people are terrified to sell a product because they think the customer will hate it and end up failing.

If that’s the case, sell it anyway and ask the customer what they thought. If it is rubbish, they’ll tell you and you may have to give a refund. But they might love the product. Either way, you will gain valuable feedback.

The faster you fail, the faster you can learn from it and improve.

Every time you fail, the closer you are to succeeding.

I love basketball, the NBA in particular. But not everyone who plays is an All star. Not every player is as dominant and athletic as Lebron James. Not everyone can jump as high hand dunk it as hard as Blake Griffin. There are hundreds of players ranging from mediocre to skilled to exceptional.

But they ALL play the game. They’re all training and ‘selling’ themselves on the court to the fans and to their coaches and team mates.

So take this example or think of any sport or you like and you’ll see it’s made up of a broad array of ‘players’ at different levels.

Business is the same. You just have to decide to play the game. Yes, you’ll start out at the bottom. Yes, you may feel inadequate at first. You may have to “fake it till you make it” a little. I confess, I did. (the only real person you really need to convince though, is you. remember that.)

Now if you’re going the personality marketing route, then there is a certain level of expertise you need to obtain if you want people to buy from you.

You do actually need to know what you’re talking about before you start going public with your content in blog or videos, or whatever. And your product actually needs to do what is says on the box. (i.e. help your customer. )

But the get to that point is easy. You simply study your niche. Study your target market. Observe other marketers. Hang out in forums and join the conversations. Study the niche topics and become an expert in it. It doesn’t take long. Another interesting fact is that every successful marketer or business owner you see is still learning. They’re still honing their skills.

You must too, otherwise you’ll be left in your competitor’s dust. If you want your slice of the customers, you must compete with showing them YOU also know what you’re talking about and your products ALSO solve their problems.

Don’t expect success to come overnight either. Lebron James didn’t get the MVP award his first year. He trains hard to improve. You should too. But you can still be in the game while you’re working on it.

So if you’re reading this and are still on the fence about putting your product or service out there, just do it. Be brave and let it fly. See what happens. What’s the worst that could happen?

Perfectionism Kills Productivity

I was chatting with a customer a while back
and he was telling me about two info-products
he’s been working on for around 6 months.

He still he isn’t ready to release them and show
them to the world yet because they’re not perfect.

I said, “They’ll never be perfect, so don’t wait.
Just get them out there.”

All this time that he’s hiding his products is
just wasting time.

It’s time that he could be making sales and building a customer
list who he could ask for feedback on the product.

The customer would be perfectly happy with the products
as they are but could offer advice or ideas for improvements.

Don’t waste time trying to make things perfect.

If you’re waiting for things to be perfect, you’ll
be waiting a long time. Too long.

One of my favorite slogans is “Money Loves Speed”.

Fast decisions and fast implementation is when you can
create great income.

I’m a copywriter also, and to me a sales letter is never
perfect but I get it to a stage that I’m happy with
and then send it off to my client for review and
see what comes back. Even the final draft is
never quite perfect. But it looks ‘good enough’
and works ‘well enough’ so I and my client are happy.

You could apply the same method with your thinking.

Don’t worry if you don’t know how to do everything
perfectly before you start. You don’t need to have
the perfect ‘plan’ before you start taking action.

You’ve got to find that ‘middle ground’ where
you can say ‘It’s good enough’ and then just
go for it.

The worst thing you can do it be like my customer
above with his products – nothing. His products are
complete but they and he are standing still.

If you’re not moving up, you’re moving down.

Start doing something, anything – to get you
moving up and one step closer to finishing your project
or releasing your project. Maybe there is just one
little thing that is holding you back. A technical
issue or something else. Fix it somehow, and get it
out the door..

Start moving to get momentum going.

Keep the momentum going by doing a little everyday,
even if it’s not the absolutely perfect thing to be doing.

Eventually, you’ll automatically get better
at choosing the best things to do to achieve your goals.

If it keeps you moving forward it’s good enough.

You’re Only Millimeteres Away From The Success You Want

Here is a bit of good advice one of my mentors gave to me a few years ago when I was struggling….

He said..

“Stu, the reason you’re not making sales is NOT because you’ve got it all backwards.. it’s just a matter of a few small adjustments….. You’ve got 95% of things right.. and only 5% wrong.. fix those little things and you’ll get there.”

So I want to pass on this advice to you too.

If you’re still struggling.. it’s not because you’re doing everything wrong.

You’re probably doing MOST things right.

But the little things you’re getting wrong are keeping you from seeing that success.. or, your breakthrough.

As Tony Robbins says, “The difference between butt ugly and gorgeous is 2 millimeters.”

SO how do you make the adjustment of that 1 or 2 millimeters that can change everything for you?

One of the best ways to see what’s missing in your business is to spy on your competitors and model what they do to succeed.

If they’re getting the results that you want, they’ve got the “Secret sauce” that you need..

You just need to find it and apply it to what you’re doing…

And… bingo!

So today, and over the weekend, do some spying on your competitors.. look closely at what they are doing.

Then try to find what it is that’s missing in your business.

The 2 Most Dangerous Mindsets That Kill Your Chances Of Succeeding Online

There is a lethal trap most newbies to internet marketing fall into.. and it’s super hard to get out of.And newbies aren’t the only victims.

I get emails and messages from guys and girls around the world telling me they have been struggling for months, sometimes years – and this is the #1 cause of it.

The worst thing is that almost all who have fallen in this trap don’t know that it’s detrimental to their success.

The trap is 2-part; trying to do everything yourself and trying to do it all for free.

I can see why people ‘think’ this is the best route to take when starting an online business… and maybe you still do, but hopefully by the end of this post, you’ll realize you must avoid this habit like the plague.

And I admit I was a little in this state of mind in the beginning of my career too – but thankfully I snapped out of it early.

I remember my first big investment (apart from getting a personal internet business coach) was getting upgraded memberships at safelists.

At first I was all for getting “free traffic”, but it was coming in in dribbles. I wanted to turn on the firehose of traffic – so I invested in pro memberships at a few safelist..

And they weren’t cheap!  Around $197 for 12 months! And I was doubting very much if I would ever see my money again.

But I decided to make it work.

One thing I always tried to do when I first started out was try to make back any money that I spent asap, so I was determined to get my money back – so I used those safelists religously. I mailed as soon as I could (I could mail every 3 days or something like that).

I’m not sure about now, but in 2007 they were actually quite responsive! I could get a dozen or more subscribers every time I mailed to the safelist members.

So did this beat writing articles and making squidoo lenses?

You bet!

There is nothing wrong with Squidoo and Articles, but at that time, doing it all my myself, I could just feel it was the long way to success.

I wanted to “fast track” and see results asap!

Doesn’t everyone?

So if you want faster results too, rethink your “work strategy”.

You might say “Oh I can’t afford to pay for a $200 membership upgrade!

But I say, “Do you want traffic today, or traffic next month?”

You might say “I can’t afford a professional autoresponder.”

But I say, “Can you afford not to invest in one? Are you planning on building a list of 300 or 300,000?”

You might say, “That designer/copywriter/mentor is too expensive… I’ll just keep going at it myself and wish for the best.”

But I say, “Why shoot yourself in the foot? Why not let experts do the job which will give you the best results (ROI)?”

I want you to see that spending money on tools and expert services is an investment.

An investment means that your money will work for you to make you more money. 

That’s how you’ve got to see business and your money in it. Money is a tool to make you more money.

If you’re holding on tight to it and not investing it, it will never grow.

Of course, you need to have a long-term plan.

You need to have all the pieces in place for your business to succeed.

For example, you’d be silly to spend hundreds on a website design only to never advertise it.

All these costs can add up, but with a long-term plan in place, and using a rough mathematical formula, you can forecast the results (PROFIT) you’ll be seeing.

That’s the great thing about most marketing campaigns.. especially online ones- You can almost predict the outcome before you start!

So have a think about your business. Are you in it for the long run, ready to dive in and get the lifestyle you want? Or are you being a wussy and just want to dip your toe in and not really see the potential that lies for you?

I hope you’re not a wussy, but if you are I have a cure for you.

Change Your Mind, Change Your Life

How powerful (and dangerous) is the mind?

I’ve recently joined Empower Network and got stuck into their training and am devouring it like a hungry wolf!

It sure is empowering  – I’m feeling a transformation already in the way I’m thinking, and my excitement for tackling a new project – actively engaging in and promoting Empower Network –  is something I haven’t felt for a long time!

The training I’ve taken from Dave & Dave so far is actually a lot better than I expected.

It’s got both marketing and mind-set training which are BOTH equally the keys to succeeding online.

As I was listening/watching the fast-start videos, one point strongly stood out and has stayed with me for the last 2 days.

That is – and I’m paraphrasing here – “You can make a success out of anything you do – you just need to decide you’re going to do it and succeed.”

So many times we make excuses why we can’t do something.

We think it’s too hard or we don’t know how.. but these negative thoughts can lead to a downward spiral.

But when you make an affirmative decision in your mind that you CAN DO IT and you will do it, no matter what, the spiral suddenly turns upwards.

Positive thinking is contagious. The more positive thoughts you consciously make, the more positive thoughts will come subconsciously.

Get into a habit of consciously changing your mind to be thinking positively.

TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR MIND – Don’t let it control itself!

Your mind can be your best friend or your worst enemy.

It will take control of your decisions for you if you let it – and this is very dangerous. It will always tell you to take the easy way out – but that’s really NOT what you want.

You know what you want and know what it takes to get there – you just need to convince yourself you WILL do it and ignore the negative thoughts that tell you otherwise.

So the next time you have negative thoughts, smash them away – replace them with positive thoughts.

Remember the promise you made to yourself.

You will succeed if you have made the decision that you will succeed.

The #1 Fear That’s Holding You Back?

It’s not the “fear of failure”.. which you probably guessed from the title.

Fear of failure is big… but I don’t think it’s the biggest fear holding back up-and-coming entrepreneurs like yourself…

It’s the fear of “putting yourself out there” in the “public eye”.

We all fear being ridiculed.. fear being shot down because we some how lack the knowledge or experience that the ‘gurus’ in your niche have.

The fact is… there is ALWAYS going to be someone more experienced.. more successful.. more beautiful.. more intelligent than you…

There is no use complaining and sulking about it .. so don’t.. you need to get over it!

Don’t compare yourself to others either..

Sure you see internet millionaires that make it look so easy..

But you know what.. they were once where you are.

They had fears.. they still do.. everyone has fears!

I have fears.. I had more fears when I started out but I was able to overcome them..

I was terrified to release a product with my name on it.

I was terrified to send an email to my list.. because I was afraid I didn’t know what to write..

“What if the content didn’t help them?.. what if they thought I was stupid.. and God forbid.. unsubscribe?! no!!

So how did I overcome the fear of “going public”?

Like Nike.. I just did it!

I sucked up my fear sent emails to my list (using P.L.R. articles which I put in my own words)

I set up M.R.R. digital products with my name on it..and sent promos out.

Did 100% of my subscribers open and read my emails? No.. and they still don’t.

Did 100% buy my products? No.. no one gets 100% conversion rates.

But some did.. maybe 10%..

Did the other 90% send me hate mail? No.

Did they unsubscribe? Yes some did.. not 90% though. Maybe 1% or less.

Did that make me run and hide and cry? No.

If you’re feeling unworthy to put yourself out there because you don’t feel confident or feel under-educated in your niche..

Then get some knowledge…. but don’t wait years or even months to start sharing your knowledge with everyone.

Don’t wait until everything is perfect because guess what… it will never be perfect.

You need to get out there with an “I ain’t care what people say” attitude..

It takes balls.. and you may get knocked down.. but shrug it off.. those who ridicule aren’t worth losing sleep over.. and you’re bigger than them.

Don’t let the fear of others’ opinions of you get in your way of getting what you want.

If you get over this fear you’ll be amazed at the things you can accomplish.
