How To Get Targeted Twitter Followers

You’ve probably already jumped onto the Twitter wagon by now but may be struggling with how to get a decent amount of followers.

There are a lot of services out there that promise to deliver hundreds or even thousands of followers to your account, but are those followers targeted?

Are they real people who are interested in your business? Are they going to stop and read your tweets and click on links you share with them?

You probably already know the answer.

Twitter followers are just like any other leads or prospects.

If they are interested in what you have to say or sell, then your conversion or subscriber rates will be high.

If they are just a group of random people who have never heard of you before then your conversion and subscriber rates will be dismal.

Twitter should be used not as a megaphone to shout to random passers-by, but as a soap box you use to address your loyal fans.

So how do you get targeted followers?

The easiest way is by reaching out to people in the ways that you normally do, but then adding a call to action for them to follow you on Twitter.

If you have an email list, a blog, or a Facebook fan page then you can use it to announce your Twitter profile and start gathering followers.

These people are already following you in one medium so it should be easy to nudge them into another.

You’ll find that they will often jump at the chance to follow you in as many channels as they can.

If you are a regular member of a forum for your particular niche, then it’s a good idea to add your Twitter information to your forum profile and, if the forum allows it, your forum signature.

Every time you make a valuable contribution to the forum, people will see you Twitter link and may choose to follow you.

This method puts your Twitter profile page right in front of people you want to target the most: people who already know who you are and who are highly interested in your niche.

Forums are where the most hardcore members of any niche hang out, so getting one of them as a follower gives you a highly targeted lead.

Another great strategy of course is to just use your Twitter feed responsibly. Don’t tweet every last thing you do, only use your tweets to share something useful.

This gives you a good chance of getting a “re-tweet”.

A re-tweet is simply when one of your followers shares your tweet with his followers. This instantly increases your exposure and gives you a good chance of picking up more followers.

As with everything else, the more you give the more you will get.

Attract followers by making your twitter feed something people will WANT to follow.

Everyone has a twitter account now, so adding you to their list is nothing new or special anymore. You have to earn their following and keep earning it tweet after tweet.

Try using your feed mostly to distribute “exclusive” free tips or links to free, funny and/or helpful stuff you find.

This is a great way to build follower loyalty AND to get re-tweets.

Naturally, the same thing goes for all type of social media like Facebook, Youtube and LinkedIn etc.

The more value you can put out there, the more people will “like” your stuff and share it.

Challenge: Get 1000 Likes On My Facebook Page

If you go to my Facebook page, you’ll see I only have 633 likes at time of writing this.

My goal is to reach 1000 ‘real’ fans by the end of June 2011.

And by real fans, I mean ‘real’ people who have chosen to follow me.

See, anyone can do the sneaky practice of buying facebook fans. Heck, you could have a million facebook fans if you just went out and bought all of them (hint: fiverr.com)..

But the unfortunate thing is that if you buy fans like that, what are they going to be worth to you?

They are not going to be people who know you, trust you or even really like you. They will just be a number. But if that’s all you care about, then go for it.

But if you do care and want a fan base of real people who know you, trust you and have an interest in what you’re sharing, then it will be much more beneficial for your business and time.

So as I said, at this point in time, my fan page has only 633 likes.

I need to get 367 more likes to reach my goal.

There are 15 days left in June so that means I need 24 likes a day.

So how am I going to go about it?

I have a few ideas..

  • First, I’ll be posting lots of good content to my facebook fan page and also to my regular profile pointing them to my fan page.
  • I’ll also be using Twitter too.. as I have a lot of followers there who can help the viral swing of things.
  • In all my emails I send to my subscribers, I’ll add a link to my facebook fan page.
  • I’m thinking of running a competition where winners will get something free.. a permanent link from my blog or thankyou page or a promotion of your product to my list etc.
  • I’ll do these things for a little while and if it’s looking like I won’t reach 1000 fans, I’ll have to pull out the big guns and incorporate some kind of funky FB script!

Well, I’d better get crackin!

Q&A: Squeeze Pages, Social Marketing, Traffic

Here’s the first weekly Q&A post!

Every week from now on, I’ll be answering your questions about Internet marketing and making money online.

Ok, so let’s get on with this week’s answers…

Q1. What is a squeeze page?

A. A squeeze page is also known as a “lead capture page”.

It’s just a very simple web page on your site that has an opt-in form to collect names and emails, and a pitch for your bribe to get your visitors to subscribe.

A squeeze page is the best way to start building a list of prospects.

Make sure you have a good bribe to get them to subscribe to your list and then just send traffic to your squeeze page.

i.e. a free 7 day e-course, a free report or video that reveals some insider secrets, free software, free cheat sheet.. whatever will appeal to your market.

Q2. Does Social marketing work anymore?

A. Hard question. I heard some marketers are abandoning social media. Does that mean it’s dead?

My answer is that it depends on your niche and how you use it.

If you’re in the “bizz opp” and “MMO” niche like me, you’ll notice that FB and Twitter look like a free spam board.

It’s very crowded with “marketers” pitching their ads in there, so it’s pretty hard to stand out.

To make the most of social media, you need to build a loyal following by sharing helpful and interesting content.

If you use FB and want to use it to promote your biz, then make a “page” for it. It’s not the best idea to use your personal profile to post ads to every hour of every day.

Social media is all about sharing cool stuff. Use it to share.. not to pitch.. and people aren’t stupid, they know the difference.

Q3. How do I create new web pages on my website?

A. Well, there are a million types of sites you can create and work with, but the simplest is just a simple HTML web page.There are free HTML editor software apps available that let you create new files and edit them as well. Try Kompozer (it’s free) http://kompozer.net/download.php

Then, after you have created an HTML page, you can upload it to your website host server.

The easiest way to do this is to use and FTP client software app. Try Filezilla (its free too)http://filezilla-project.org/download.php

Q4. I need traffic! How can I get traffic to my site?

A. Again, it depends on your niche and your desired outcome of your website.

The very first thing to do is think about and seek out WHERE your target market are already “hanging out” online.

Are they in forums? On Youtube? On facebook? On other people’s lists? On Google? Reading other guy’s blogs?

Often times, your audience is in more than one place. But once you determine where they are, it makes it easy to go after them.

Beware of buying traffic!

Let me tell you from experience that cheap traffic does practically nothing but make your hit count bigger.

If you want to buy traffic, be prepared to spend a fair chunk of change on it if you want any sort of decent response from it. i.e. PPC, ezine ads, banner ads etc.

3 Social Marketing Tips for Internet Marketers

i love to shareAs internet marketers, we are constantly looking for ways to increase our website traffic but we should also be striving to increase our following….which will increase our traffic in the long run anyway 🙂

The most successful marketers have a following, a crowd of raving fans who drop everything to hear what they have to say and buy anything they recommend.

Social marketing comes plays a massive role in building a loyal following and a reputation. The ability to make friends and share content with ease in real time lets people see what kind of people we really are.

My favorites are Facebook and Twitter – feel free to add me as your friend and follow me. Youtube is great too but I don’t have too many videos to share at the moment. That’s something I want to work on in the near future.

Using social media like Facebook is a great tool to build a good reputation if you do it right, but you can damage your reputation if you aren’t careful and abuse the power of being able to “share” content and links at any time to a crowd of potential customers.

Here are a few basic rules to follow when using social marketing to build your following and NOT piss people off.

1. Be human….not a spammy robot. You probably want to make money fast and posting heartless ad after ad seems like the logical way, but it is not the way to reach people. People can see straight through ads and will shun you instantly. Instead, show people that you are real.

2. Use it to build your brand.
Like my previous post where I talked about using a personal blog to brand you or your company, your social profiles are branding tools too. If you’re always posting junk you will quickly become known as someone who posts junk…and soon no one will bother to look at your stuff. How you act and what you post reflects you and your brand, so use social media to strengthen it.

3. 90% fun, 10% business. The whole idea with social media IMO is to have fun….even if we are using it for our business. It’s there so we can share what we are doing and see what others are doing in real life. The reality is that no one wants to see ALL ads..they want to see what we are doing with our life. You’ll attract many more eyeballs to a picture of your microwave dinner than to a spammy link.

I think a good ratio is 90/10. So for 9 times out of 10, upload photos, post related quotes, (clean…unless you can afford to post dirty) jokes, popular news trends, helpful selfless info and the BIGGEST one, make conversation with others. Sure throw in a link to a product or your website here and there, but keep them moderate.
